The guard dogs at the concentration camp were all local dogs that were acclimated to the cold and snowy weather. Actors were instructed to walk the dogs from point A to point B, and trainers cued the dogs from off-camera to bark. When the dogs were not acting, they resided in comfy kennels inside of a heated building on location.

In one scene, a rat appears in the latrine with Lt. Hart. The trainer set the rat on its mark and stood off-camera holding up a treat to prompt the rat to sit up in the brief scene.

A horse and cart also show up at the camp. The trainer hooked the horse to the cart and stood off-camera while an experienced driver directed the horse into the camp.

One of the soldiers holds a cat. A trainer gave the cat to the actor, who held it as he lay on his bed. The trainer retrieved the cat from the actor after the scene was complete.
