Throughout the film, the main character has a pet dog, who is seen performing such mild action as sitting/standing/lying, being held or petted, and walking/running on or off leash. For all of these scenes, trainers used hand signals and verbal commands to cue the mild action, which the trained dog was accustomed to performing. The barking/growling was also a trained behavior.

In the scene where the man stands in front of the other firemen with the dog by his side, before following him out, dog was walked to set on leash by wranglers from housing. The dog was rewarded after each command with a small treat. They cued dog to bark from side of camera using hand signals.



In the scene where the dog runs towards the kids in slow motion, then stops and lies down, the wrangler positioned the dog at mark A. On action the trainer called the dog as the camera backed up. The dog ran towards the camera. The trainer lied the dog down on his side in front of the children. The kids pet the dog.

In the scene when the actress talks to two toads in her lab, picks them up and kisses them, tanks were set up by set decorator following instructions by toad wrangler. Actress prepped on how to handle frogs and spends several minutes on previous day when frogs were on set, practicing handling them and carrying them.
