Fine performances by the film's stars distinguish this sensitive story about a childless couple, who decide to adopt a baby. Michael (James Woods) and Linda (Glenn Close) have been married for ten years and have a close and loving relationship that they share with their pet dog, Ellen. He is a veterinarian, and they lead an idyllic, middle-class existence with a lovely home, car and all the material accessories a couple could want. What's missing is what they want most, a baby. Through an attorney, they arrange to adopt the baby of a pregnant but unmarried young woman, Lucy. They meet with Lucy, a sweet girl from a poor background, who wants only what is best for her unborn child. The trio become close, and when Lucy goes into labor, it is Michael and Linda who are there for her in the delivery room. Linda and Michael bring their baby boy home to the nursery they prepared for him and their happiness is complete, until Lucy has second thoughts about her decision.
